The Family Stone January 9, 2006

So I have a serious problem with movies like this. You sit in your chair watching Law & Order and you get hit with a preview for a movie, that despite the fact that it appears to be a chick-flick, looks like it might be funny. It’s only when you get to the theatre, because you are like me and do no research on movie before you go see it, that you realize this is not some light-hearted romantic comedy. This is a drama with the occasional funny line.

So this movie got a big strike against it from me about half-way through when you find out the Mother is dying of cancer. If you don’t know why that would bother me, let me just state that neither of my parents are living anymore and one of them died of cancer.

The movie does have a couple upsides, Rachel McAdams is in it. She is pretty hot. Then you have good old Luke Wilson for the comedy relief. Luke plays one of the children, the one that enjoys getting high with his dad. Can’t beat that right? Right?

I’m not gonna give away anything else about this movie, let’s just say it wasn’t my cup of tea. On the upside, if you don’t have psychological hangups like me, you might like it. But for some reason, seeing a parental figure struggle with illness through a movie and then die in the end just doesn’t sit well with me anymore.
